Jamaica Dive Guide

You want it mild or wild? The home of all-inclusive resorts and Rastafarian culture goes both ways.
Jamaica, 1982. On one of my first assignments as an underwater photographer, I deplaned in Montego Bay to the pungent smell of ganja pervading the airport. I wasn’t well-traveled then and this was only the first of many culture shocks to come. In the parking lot, dreadlocked Rastafarians openly smoked spliffs the size of cigars and throughout the island kids hustled me for my tennis shoes or spare change. But what a beautiful island! From the scenic Blue Mountains to virtually untouched reefs along the north shore, Jamaica had a wild, untamed edge. The shallow reef and deep wall diving was surprisingly good; the dive shops professional but low-key.
