Seychelles and Maldives Dive In

The Indian Ocean may be the most underexplored of the world’s diveable seas, and it’s certainly the most difficult for American divers to reach. But European divers have begun to explore the area’s lush reefs and abundant marine life from dive bases in open-ocean outposts like the Seychelles and the Maldives. A thousand miles off the shores of Kenya, the Seychelle Islands remain an isolated Eden teeming with unique sea life. Like Costa Rica and the Galapagos, the Seychelles are probably best appreciated with an “over-and-under” sensibility, attuned both to topside and underwater natural diversions. It’s easy to imagine that the independent Republic of Maldives was founded expressly for diving purposes. At least three-quarters of the world’s reef fish can be found in these waters, often just a short snorkel from your beachside resort. (more…)
