No one knows how the fire started, but it spread across the wooden steamer Montana with devilish speed. The ship’s crew was driven over the side into the yawl boat, but Captain George C. Burns refused to abandon his ship to Lake Huron’s Shipwreck Alley until all his men were safely off the doomed vessel.

St. Clair River Michigan dive guide

“You’ve gotta be kidding.”

That’s the reaction most divers have when they’re introduced to the standard St. Clair River entry-an awkward clamber over a seawall’s waist-high handrail, followed by an eight-foot drop into a rushing, four- to six-knot torrent.
