That kind of day. A sort of rolling sweetness that builds and builds when everything goes just right. Even the two-hour boat ride out to the Papoose, a sunken World War II tanker, was unusually smooth for North Carolina diving. Which was good news for the Brazilian TV crew rigging a high-res video camera that looked suspiciously like a torpedo – an appropriate image for an area that has seen some of the Atlantic’s fiercest naval warfare. North Carolina’s “Torpedo Alley” is where German U-boats tried to sever the most important Allied supply line. The Papoose became the last of Korvettenkapitan Johann Mohr’s hat trick of mayhem on March 18, 1942, and one of the Cape Lookout area’s several world-class war wrecks.

Fantasy Lake North Carolina dive guide

As our pickup truck rolled down flat, straight roads through the pastures of North Carolina’s Piedmont, I saw no hint of anything worth diving. Until Fantasy Lake’s indigo water and high granite walls appeared.

Not since last century’s slaughter of whales has an animal been so doggedly hunted. And talk about bad press: The fearsome, loathsome shark has long since replaced Moby Dick as the symbol of all that we puny humans fear about the sea. No wonder we kill them by the millions, for their fins, for their cartilage, for the sheer hell of it.
