Not since last century’s slaughter of whales has an animal been so doggedly hunted. And talk about bad press: The fearsome, loathsome shark has long since replaced Moby Dick as the symbol of all that we puny humans fear about the sea. No wonder we kill them by the millions, for their fins, for their cartilage, for the sheer hell of it.

South Florida The Gold Coast dive guide

At the University of Miami in the early ’80s, I discovered the best sites of Florida’s Gold Coast – Palm Beach, Broward and Dade counties – because I had to. Weekend budget diving was all my checkbook could afford. Wrecks, reefs – everything I could hope to dive was within 90 minutes of Miami. It was also the dawn of the local artificial reef programs when the three counties were sinking new sites faster than I could dive them.
