New River Virginia dive guide

Drifting lazily with the New River’s current through mountainous southwestern Virginia, we empty our BCs and drop down 15 feet to the bottom below. It looks like any other river bottom – until we encounter the first boulder. As if descending stairs to a secret vault, we ease down past one massive stone after another searching for the dark heart of a local legend. At 50 feet, natural light from the midday sun fades to near darkness. Reaching for our lights, we continue the eerie descent until we bottom out on a layer of dark sand at 72 feet.
